چکیده

Canonical matrices are given for • bilinear forms over an algebraically closed or real closed field; • sesquilinear forms over an algebraically closed field and over real quaternions with any nonidentity involution; and • sesquilinear forms over a field F of characteristic different from 2 with involution (possibly, the identity) up to classification of Hermitian forms over finite extensions of F; the canonical matrices are based on any given set of canonical matrices for similarity over F. A method for reducing the problem of classifying systems of forms and linear mappings to the problem of classifying systems of linear mappings is used to construct the canonical matrices. This method has its This is the authors’ version of a work that was accepted for publication in Linear Algebra and its Applications (2007), doi:10.1016/j.laa.2007.07.023. ∗The research was done while this author was visiting the University of Utah supported by NSF grant DMS-0070503 and the University of São Paulo supported by FAPESP, processo 05/59407-6.

Essential decomposition of polynomially normal matrices in real indefinite inner product spaces

Polynomially normal matrices in real indefinite inner product spaces are studied, i.e., matrices whose adjoint with respect to the indefinite inner product is a polynomial in the matrix. The set of these matrices is a subset of indefinite inner product normal matrices that contains all selfadjoint, skew-adjoint, and unitary matrices, but that is small enough such that all elements can be comple...

The Canonical Generalized Polar Decomposition

The polar decomposition of a square matrix has been generalized by several authors to scalar products on Rn or Cn given by a bilinear or sesquilinear form. Previous work has focused mainly on the case of square matrices, sometimes with the assumption of a Hermitian scalar product. We introduce the canonical generalized polar decomposition A = WS, defined for general m × n matrices A, where W is...

Constructing the Group Preserving a System of Forms

We present a practical algorithm to construct the subgroup of the general linear group that preserves a system of bilinear or sesquilinear forms on a vector space defined over a finite field. Components include efficient algorithms to construct the Jacobson radical and the group of units of a matrix algebra.

Ela Structured Conditioning of Matrix Functions

STRUCTURED CONDITIONING OF MATRIX FUNCTIONS∗ PHILIP I. DAVIES† Abstract. The existing theory of conditioning for matrix functions f(X):Cn×n → Cn×n does not cater for structure in the matrix X. An extension of this theory is presented in which when X has structure, all perturbations of X are required to have the same structure. Two classes of structured matrices are considered, those comprising ...
